The football team focused on several aspects of play that warranted improvement, as the Lions prepared to take on Shawnee Mission North at home this week. On Friday night, the second-ranked Chesty Lions football team struggled to a 15-9, come-from-behind victory over the unheralded Indians at a muddy Haskell Stadium to go 3-0 on the season.

The volleyball team goes 2-1, as Bishop Miege pulled an upset win over the Lions in the Shawnee Mission West Tournament.

It’s band-day Saturday at KU this week. The Marching Lions and several other area high school bands participated in the festivities, including the Saturday morning parade in Downtown Lawrence.

Sandra Day O’Connor was sworn in as the first woman on the Supreme Court. The then 51-year-old Arizona appeals judge won a 99-0 endorsement from the Senate to become the 102nd justice in the 191-year history of the national’s highest court.
