The winter season sports – boys and girls basketball, wrestling, and boys swimming, prepare for their first competitions.

The girls basketball team dropped their opening match in a close game at home with a buzzer beater shot by Topeka West.

The LHS wrestling squad split a home dual meet by defeating Holton, but losing to Bishop Ward High School.

Several senior football players were named to the All-Sunflower League football team chosen by league coaches. In all, Lawrence totaled seven first team selections and four on the second team. The Lions also filled seven spots on the honorable mention squad.

As of December 31, 1981 the familiar “pop top” openers on beverage cans will be banned for sale in Kansas. In an effort to rid the environment of the ring-like, sharp edged pop tops, the Kansas Legislature passed a bill outlawing the devices.
