The fall sports season starts to draw to a close.
The previous weekend, the Lions volleyball team captured the Sunflower League championship by humbling previously unbeaten Shawnee Mission East. The team tuned up for sub-state competition by polishing off three opponents in a quadrangular meet at home. Then the six-time defending state champion Lions extended their record to 37-3 for the season and earned a spot in the state tournament by winning a four-team sub-state tournament in Topeka.
Debbie Stephens qualified for the girls state tennis tournament, but she lost in the first round of play. The girls golf team took seventh place in the Class 6A-5A girls state golf tournament Tuesday at the Salina Municipal course.
The cross county team preps to run in their Saturday morning regional at North Topeka Park. Kyle Roste took the top honors with a winning time of 10:05 on a muddy two-mile-course. Overall, the boys team finished in fifth place in the nine-team regional meet.
The football team prepares for a road district showdown against 5-2 Topeka West at Washburn University’s Moore Bowl. Scoring on a one-yard run with 3:20 left in the game, the Lions football team comes from behind to take a 13-10 victory over the Topeka West Chargers improving to 8-0 on the year.
