Services for James I. Smith III, 38, Lecompton, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Lawrence. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
Mr. Smith died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, in Lawrence.
He was born May 15, 1964, in Lawrence, the son of James Ira and Theresa (Schmidt) Smith Jr. He attended St. John’s School, Central Junior High School and Lawrence High School.
Mr. Smith joined the Marine Corps in 1983. He worked as a laborer and operator for Price Asphalt Co. in Topeka. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and Operators No. 101 in Topeka.
Survivors include his companion, Erin DuBois, Lawrence; his mother and stepfather, Theresa and Tony Gauna, Lawrence; his father and stepmother, James and Pam Smith, Lawrence; Three daughters; a son; two sisters, Cheryl Lafrenz and Joann Wyrick, both of Lawrence two stepsisters, Annette Gauna Easum and Jody Steiner, both of Lawrence; and two stepbrothers, Anthony Gauna and Charles Gauna, both of Lawrence.
A wake with rosary will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. The family will meet with friends until 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.
The family suggests memorials to the James I. Smith Memorial Funds. They may be sent in care of the mortuary.
