Police: Aurora woman killed by her boyfriend
A woman found dead at an Aurora townhome Friday was stabbed several times by her boyfriend while she lay in bed, police said today.

The body of 44-year-old Dawn Cassell was discovered by her brother, who had gone to check why she had failed to go to work Friday, said Detective Bob Friel, an Aurora police spokesman.

Also at the house when Cassell’s body was found was her boyfriend, David Wells, 51, who apparently tried to commit suicide by stabbing himself twice in the upper body, Friel said.

Wells, who inflicted life-threatening injuries on himself, was taken to a local hospital where he is under guard by Aurora police officers. Friel said Wells will be taken to the Arapahoe County jail when he’s released from the hospital.

“The community can rest assured that the man responsible for this violent crime is in custody and no longer a threat to the community,” Friel said. “We are not looking for any other suspects at this time.”

Police were called to the townhome on the 1100 block of South Quintero Court just before 4 p.m. Friday, Friel said, but detectives are still trying to determine when the slaying happened.

Friel said the couple was at the home when they had an argument. A knife from inside the home was used.
