The Lawrence School District 497 staff projects that there will be fewer students enrolled for the upcoming school year than the prior year. At Lawrence High School, 1,627 students were enrolled for the first day of classes, excluding extension students.

A column is published evaluating the newly-developed state playoff system for Kansas High School football. This will result in the 1981-82 Lawrence High football team playing their six Sunflower League foes first (five Shawnee Mission schools, plus new league member Leavenworth), then compete for a playoff berth against district opponents Topeka, Topeka West, and Highland Park.
