October 5 – 11, 1981

The focus and attention of the football team shifts to the next opponent on the schedule, an important Friday night road game against Shawnee Mission Northwest.

The hard-fought battle came down to the fate of a 40-yard field goal attempt by Northwest with 2:45 remaining in the game. The late 4th quarter kick hit the crossbar and fell back unsuccessfully, saving the Lion’s 9-8 victory over the Cougars at SM North’s Stadium.

The volleyball team suffered only its third loss of the season against a Shawnee Mission East squad in a triangular meet at SM Northwest. Later in the week, the Lions volleyball team won its seventh consecutive Lawrence Invitational meet, losing only one game while winning six straight matches, defeating Salina South, SM North, Hutchinson and Bishop Miege in pool play, and taking down SM Northwest and Salina South again in the semifinal and finals.

Lawrence High’s boys gymnastics team won for the third time this year, taking the top spot in the six-team Wichita Invitational meet by a mere 13/100 of a point victory over Wichita South.

The girls tennis team and golf team continue to have mixed results in their matches this week.

The cross country team finished in seventh for the boys, and in fourth for the girls at the Lawrence Invitational meet at the home Haskell course. The boys team ran without standout Kyle Roste because of an injury.

Egypt President Anwar Sadat was assassinated this week by men in army uniforms who opened fire on him during a military parade.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show continues to show as the Midnight Flick on Friday and Saturday at the Varsity movie theater in Downtown Lawrence. All seats are $3.00.
