As the calendar pages turn to October, several members of the LHS class of 1982 are commended for their high test scores in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
The 3-0 LHS football team is voted to the No. 1 ranking in the Class 6A state football poll by prevailing in the three season-opening league games. The squad prepared for a road game to take on 0-3 Shawnee Mission South.
Avenging a close defeat from the prior year, the Lions took command in the second half to run roughshod over Shawnee Mission South in a 35-14 victory, improving the team’s win-loss record to 4-0.
The volleyball team improved its record to 12-2, after dropping a repeat-match against Manhattan, and defeating Hutchinson and Council Grove. The girls tennis team and golf team had mixed results in their matches.
Kyle Roste and the Lions boys team captured the top position in an eight-team cross country meet at Topeka Seaman. Roste took top honors and covered the 5,000-meter course in 16:35, more than 40-seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Roste continued his season undefeated streak at a Thursday meet taking the top individual title with a finish time of 9:43 over a two-mile course.
